DIY RC Airplane: Part 1

So about 10 months or so ago, I went to my local hackerspace (SB Hackerspace) to do some work on a project that was just a bit too big for my small balcony workbench. This hackerspace has a giveaway table where people can put stuff they don’t need that they don’t want to hit the landfill. I’ve both left and taken stuff from it in the past and it’s always fun rummaging through other people’s trash and finding treasure.

This trip, I found treasure, for sure: A matched set of ESC, motor, and propeller.

A little bit of background:

I’m lucky enough that I live in Santa Barbara and, pretty much any day of the week, I can amble about 10 minutes down the hill and sit on the beach, taking in a great view of the ocean, the oil rigs in the distance, and Santa Cruz Island. Across the years of me visiting SB and, now, living here, I’ve always wondered what it would be like to visit Santa Cruz Island? Now, there are boats you can take over there, and you can even camp overnight, but I didn’t want to visit on land

like a peasant

I wanted to fly over it.

But I’m not a pilot. So I’m going to build an RC airplane to do it.

Have I ever built an RC airplane? No. Have I ever FLOWN an RC airplane. Also no. But when has anything like that ever stopped me? Never.

This isn’t so much the start of a project as it is a declaration that I want to make something that can do this. Not today. Not this month. Not even likely this year. But eventually.

Goals. We’ve gotta set goals.
