It’s January 1st and, as arbitrary of a date as it may be to set up new habits and plans for the year to come – because the best time to start on new habits or goals is NOW, no matter time of year it is – it’s also not at all arbitrary because, hey, this is how we do things. It’s a new calendar year, which means lots of people, including myself, are making the effort to start anew. Wipe the proverbial slate clean. Start on things in earnest. Or at least try to.
So here are the habits I’d like to build and the goals I’d like to accomplish over the next year.
Habits:
- I’d like to establish a habit of regular, intentioned exercise. Not “Hey I was at a convention and walked 13000 steps every day for 4 days, so that counts, right?”. I want to be able to set aside an hour 3 to 4 times a week where I do SOMETHING to get my heart pumping. It could be going for a walk, riding my bike, swim in the ocean – IT’S RIGHT THERE – using the Ring Fit I bought a couple years ago that’s now in storage. Something. My life is very sedentary and I’m starting to feel it. To be clear, this is not about weight loss. It’s about being more active.
- I have interesting thoughts, so I’d like to write a blog post at least once a week.
- I’d also like to get back into regular journaling and using that journaling to keep track of things I should be tracking in my day to day life.
- Lastly, If I make something, I WILL take a picture of it and, at the very least, get that shit on Insta.
Goals:
- I miss creating content, but the way my life is right now, particularly the limitations I have in personal space, means I’m going to have to make different kinds of content than I used to. Maybe this means I write more and video less. Maybe this means I make more audio projects. Maybe this means I finally dive into that exploration of procedurally generated content I started looking into about eight years ago. Who knows? My goal for this is to make at least one form of content a month. Just one. Can’t be too hard, right?
- This past November I managed to sell $250 worth of lamps and other items at an art auction. Never thought I could do that, but now I’m going to try for more. I’m almost done getting my online shop up and running and I want to try tabling at at least 3 art shows or other type of event like that this year.
- Tech Goals:
- Better document my self-hosting journey
- Get all my self hosted services setup with SSL and proper authentication (Maybe use LDAP?)
- Start weaning off of Adobe as much as possible, if it’s even possible.
- Finish backing up all our DVD’s and Blu-rays.
That’s more or less it! Might seem like a lot, but these are really just intentions. I’m not going to feel too badly if I can’t make some of these a priority given everything that’s happening in the world and my life right now. But I’m going to try. That’s the important part, I think.
